I'm determined to write a dinosaurs-in-modern-times scenario, but I'm having a hard time deciding how to shoehorn the dinosaurs in. I have determined a few key possibilities:
1. Jurassic Park-style mad science.
2. Dinotopia-style isolated island where evolution stopped for millions of years.
3. Time travel (back or forth).

Feel free to suggest others, and then help me figure out the pros and cons of each possibility. I think the first is the most realistic, but even so, it has a lot of big problems, so don't worry too much about realism. I think it'll depend more on the sort of story you want to tell.

Hmmm.... Dinosaurs-in-modern-times... In what capacity, may I ask?

I struggle to see how this would be that entertaining. I don't mean to burst your bubble, but I'm not sure if you'd get away with it. With nearly everyone having seen the Jurassic Park series, and or King-Kong, it leaves little to the imagination.

What about an invasion of galactic dinos, returning from outer space to reclaim their long lost home? Very Happy

EDIT: They could even be the "tools" or "war machines" of another race?...

Just had another little spark. What about doing a "forgotten realms" world merge?

Whilst, like you said, the Jurassic Park DNA re-build is the most realistic, a world/dimension merge is theoretically possible (whether or not anything would be left after such a collision is another question). I recall watching/reading about this a while ago - Think it was about Hawkings theories. I think its loosely based on string theory, the multi-verse theory, with a bit of quantum physics thrown in, where it is theorised all dimensions are in a line. If, for some reason 2 or more collide with one-another, the result could be your game world.

It could even be post-apocalyptic (collision destroys loads, man-kind is thrown into chaos, etc, etc.). Which would be cool in my opinion. Killing Dinos with a modern weaponry wouldn't be too hard. Being reduced to cave-man technology, save a few post-modern trinkets... That's another ball-game!

Fallout with dinosaurs. EPIC!

A fair question. I don't actually want it to be the main focus, and while I haven't thought it through fully, I thought throwing dinosaurs in at the end as a big surprise would be fun. For example, the investigators have been solving an abduction case, they're are about to launch their big raid on the cultist compound... and then dinosaurs attack!

I've had similar thoughts, especially dinos vs. mechs.

The multiversal stuff is definitely an angle worth looking into. If nothing else, it allows you to just throw dinosaurs in without having to explain whether it was magic or space-time anomalies or what. The survivors can take the time to work it out for themselves.

A mystery campaign could be fun, if you can make them think they're hunting some wild animal, or something. Give them a red herring or two, before delivering the prize. You could make it look like a grizzle serial killer on the loose, introduce a couple of suspects, then open it up to the possibility of it being some sort of wild animal. Obviously, I'm imagining a "rogue" dino which has managed to survive into modern times undetected. Or has it been "rebuilt" by some shady organisation and released into the wild?...

Dinocrisis meets x-files.

Gotta be a win!

Or perhaps a "lost valley of the dinosaurs" thing. That would actually fit in well with a sort of Victoriany, Livingstoney African explorer/big-game hunter theme I was leaning towards.

Kind of similar to one of the first Cthulhu scenarios I played, actually. During the 2nd Anglo-Boer War, a detachement of British troops is sent to some remote rural town to deal with a man-eating lion that had been causing problems. But of course, it wasn't a lion at all.

You're quite a fan of seen Y eat Y, rather than X, aren't you?

Just looking at the facts.

Tar brush at the ready...

Half eaten corpses. In Africa. Based during the turn of the century, when cannibalism was more common, or at least promoted as being so. Can't blame me for misinterpreting.

Also, surely they were just looking for (as far as they knew) "a Lion", as I'm pretty sure most wild animals have a natural tendency to eat us.

Out of curiosity, what was it in the end?

Lost valley is good, and I've done similar things with a 'Hollow Earth' storyline. Loosely based on the Silurians from Dr Who, my intelligent-dinosaur baddies came up to the surface to return it to Mesozoic conditions with a fusion planet heater, a whole bunch of deinonychuses, and a retrovirus that turned susceptible apes into ape-dinosaur hybrids.

Hmm, not too sure anymore. This was 2000, I think. Byakhees, I think.

Lots of fun, though, very well paced and atmospheric. I played an alcoholic Scotsman, and did the whole game in a ridiculous accent, which I really enjoyed. Guess it might have pissed off the other players, but nobody commented.

Susceptible how? Would that include human apes? Is it a quota system, divided by species?
